B.A.R.C Artist Writing Residency


We are offering 2 artist writers a 1 month residency in B.A.R.C. Bexhill Artist Research Centre. 

Our inaugural B.A.R.C. Artist Writing Residency will allow for 2 artists based in East Sussex to build connections between local histories, our artist library collection, artist-made publications, and develop new strands of research and writing for their artistic practices.
The residency will culminate with the production of a new publication, to be self published by the artists, with support from Flatland, and housed permanently within our artist library collection. This publication may be collaborative between the 2 selected artists.    

Who? 2 artists based in East Sussex that are interested in developing or maintaining writing as part of their artistic practice. We particularly encourage artists from lower socioeconomic backgrounds or on low income to apply.  
 
Where? Bexhill Artist Research Centre, Flatland Projects, Unit 22 Beeching Rd, Bexhill, Bexhill-on-Sea TN39 3LJ. Residency artists will have access to Bexhill Artist Research Centre library collection, the kitchen facilities and the Flatland residency studio during building opening hours Thursday - Saturday. 

When? Both artists will be on a 1 month joint residency in July 2025
Application deadline: Thursday 8th May 2025 12:00 midday  
Interviews: W/C 12th May 
Beginning of residency: Thursday 3rd July 2025
End of residency: Thursday 31st July 2025
Celebration event and publication launch: 13th September 2025

What is included?
  • An artist fee of £500 for each artist
  • £500 production budget for publication per artist
  • Publication design support from Flatland Team 
  • Access to Bexhill Artist Research Centre library collection
  • Both artists will have shared access to Flatland residency studio

Flatland Futures Artist Writing Forum 2025

Flatland futures presents ‘Artists Writing Forum’, a free 4 month programme of artist writing workshops led by Jen Calleja and Claire Ratinon.

The writing forum is designed to both enable artists who are curious about writing as medium, and to provide a network and forum for existing writers to develop and share their work. Writing workshops are led by established professional contemporary writers Jen Calleja and Claire Ratinon; they are designed to kickstart creativity and build new strategies for writing.

Flatland Projects seeks to celebrate writing as a form of creative expression for artists in East Sussex, offering support and community to our surrounding creative ecosystem.

15 artists based in East Sussex that are interested in developing or maintaining writing as part of their artistic practice. We particularly encourage artists from lower socioeconomic backgrounds or on low income to apply. 
If you have already taken part in the Artist Writing Forum workshops sadly you are unable to re-apply to the programme as we are keen to offer this opportunity to as many artist writers as possible.

This programme runs on the following dates from May to August.
4 half day writing workshops
2 half day sharing sessions
10am - 1pm

Application deadline: 12pm 24th April 2025
