Wealden Studio & Maker Space Feasibility Study - East Sussex Artist & Creative Ecosystem Audit - Click Here
Flatland has been commissioned by Wealden District Council to undertake a feasibility study exploring the potential for new artist studios and maker spaces across the district. This work forms part of a wider Artist Ecology Audit across East Sussex, examining how creative communities operate within — and across — different geographies.
We recognise that artists and makers rarely work in isolation. Many practitioners move between towns, rural locations and coastal hubs, contributing to a wider, interconnected creative ecosystem. This audit seeks to better understand how Wealden fits within that ecology, and how future infrastructure can support both local practitioners and those working across the region.
Through this survey, we are gathering insight that will directly inform future planning, investment and the development of sustainable, long-term creative spaces.
The key objectives of this audit are to:
- Understand the current and future demand for artist studios and maker spaces
- Identify preferred locations and geographical gaps in provision across Wealden
- Assess affordability, access needs and barriers to participation
- Explore different models of provision, including shared, dispersed and specialist spaces
- Understand how artists currently work across district boundaries in East Sussex
- Gather insight into governance, community and operational needs for sustainable spaces
- Inform potential development strategies, partnerships and funding opportunities
Your responses are vital in helping shape the future of creative infrastructure in Wealden and ensuring it reflects the real needs of artists and makers.
Whether you are currently based in Wealden, elsewhere in East Sussex, or have a connection to the area, your perspective is important.
